EMF Tip #38: Keep 8+ Inches From Your Screen

Leaning in close to your screen increases exposure to electric and magnetic fields from the display.

Distance is the cheapest variable to change. A few inches of extra space between your face and the display costs nothing, needs no equipment and works for every kind of screen.

Why sitting back helps

A display is more than a panel. Behind it sit the backlight, the power circuitry that drives it and, on a laptop, the logic board and battery. Their fields are strongest right at the surface and weaken quickly as you move away from a compact source like that.

Room between you and the screen

Sitting back from the screen puts distance in the way of its fields

Example data: magnetic field of two household appliances
Hairdryer at 3 cm16.34 µT
Hairdryer at 30 cm0.16 µT
Hairdryer at 60 cm0.02 µT
Vacuum cleaner at 3 cm15.98 µT
Vacuum cleaner at 30 cm0.97 µT
Vacuum cleaner at 60 cm0.04 µT
Fields fall off quickly with distance, so a small move back helps more than most accessories, and a stand makes it easy to hold.

Household appliances measured in Japan; the authors found fields fall drastically with distance and do not track the appliance's power rating. Radio sources fall off with distance too, though more gradually. Source: IEEJ Transactions on Fundamentals and Materials (2009)

The explainer uses a hairdryer and a vacuum cleaner as stand-ins because their fields are well documented. The shape of the curve is what carries over: most of the drop happens in the first stretch away from the source, so a modest change in sitting position gets you much of the gain.

Putting the distance in place

The Fix: Position yourself at least 8 inches, ideally arm’s length, from your laptop screen. Use a larger font or zoom if needed.

  • Sit with your back against the chair and extend an arm toward the screen. Your fingertips should just reach it.
  • If the text looks small from there, raise the font size or the browser zoom instead of leaning in.
  • On a laptop, push the machine back and use a separate keyboard so your hands can still reach the keys.
  • An external monitor sits farther from the body of the laptop than the built-in screen can, which makes the arm’s-length rule easy to keep.

How to check the distance

A gaussmeter held at your usual leaning-in position, and then at the farther one, shows how much the magnetic reading drops. An electric field meter gives the same comparison for electric fields. On many modern screens the reading at a sitting distance is low enough to barely register, which is a useful result in itself.

Adjustable Laptop Stand

A stand raises the screen and moves it back, which makes keeping your distance easier. Use it with a separate keyboard so you can sit further away.

Limits worth knowing

Research note: All Swiss ambient ELF magnetic field measurements were well below the limit based on ICNIRP 1998, at a median of 0.2% [6].

Sitting back does not change what the display emits. It changes how much of that reaches you. Because this tip is about distance only, the Wi-Fi radio and the rest of the laptop are unaffected by it.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as “possibly carcinogenic to humans,” a rating based on limited human evidence for glioma in wireless phone users. The US National Cancer Institute says the evidence to date suggests cell phone use does not cause brain or other kinds of cancer, and a WHO-commissioned meta-analysis found no association between ever or regular mobile phone use and glioma (pooled relative risk 1.01). Precautions are a personal choice, not a response to a demonstrated harm [1][2][3].

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I keep 8+ inches from my screen?

Electromagnetic fields from your display are stronger at close distances, and leaning in increases the field you are exposed to, though at normal viewing distances it is small [4]. By maintaining at least 8 inches of distance, you reduce your exposure to both electric and magnetic fields emitted by the screen, following the distance principle which is one of the most effective EMF protection strategies.

Does screen distance really make a difference in EMF protection?

Yes, distance is one of the most effective EMF protection strategies because electromagnetic field strength decreases with distance from the source. Field strength does fall off with distance: in household measurements a CRT-era TV averaged 4.09 microtesla at 3 cm and 0.18 microtesla at 60 cm. The BioInitiative Report is a contested position, so treat distance as a sensible low-cost habit rather than a proven health measure [4][5].

How can I remember to maintain proper distance from my screen?

You can use a laptop stand or desk setup that positions your screen at eye level and at least 8 inches away, creating a physical barrier that naturally maintains the recommended distance. Setting a reminder or adjusting your workspace ergonomically makes this tip easier to follow consistently throughout your day.

What other EMF protection strategies should I combine with screen distance?

While maintaining distance from screens is crucial, you can enhance your protection by using Faraday bags for mobile devices, RF shielding for routers, and implementing room-by-room strategies outlined in comprehensive EMF protection guides. Combining multiple approaches creates a stronger defense against electromagnetic field exposure in your daily environment.
